When a number a is multiplied by itself n times, the product is represented by the symbol an and is referred to as 'a to the nth powe'r or 'a to the power of n'. a is called the base and n is called the exponent.
 
Examples
34 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81
4x3 = 4 . x . x . x
