Irrational Numbers

An irrational number is any number that cannot be expressed as the ratio of two whole (integer) numbers. You can never exactly write down an irrational number as a decimal number - there are simply an infinite number of decimal places. Examples of irrational numbers include e and pi.

The term surd can be applied to irrational roots or sums of irrational roots.
