Division

Division is the process whereby the number of times one number (called the divisor) can be held in a second (called the dividend) is calculated. The result of this process is called a quotient. If the divisor will not go into the dividend an integral number of times, the amount left over is called the remainder. Division is represented by the symbol  , a slash / or a bar -. In the last two cases, the whole expression can be called a fraction, where the dividend is called the numerator and the divisor is called the denominator.
